Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system (which is responsible for clearing fluid from tissues) does not function properly. It is often a complication following breast and other forms of cancer treatment. It can result in long-term swelling of one or more parts of the body which can be extremely debilitating and painful if not addressed early. Whilst frequently occurring in the arms and legs, it can also be present in the body, groin and head and neck regions. It causes discomfort, reduced function, impaired mobility and can cause recurrent infections.
