Our physiotherapists and Myotherapist use a number of different techniques to eliminate active trigger points (tight spots), ranging from deep tissue massage, stretching, heat, tens machines, cupping and dry-needling.
In our experience, dry needling is an extremely effective method of eliminating these tight spots in the muscles that you experience pain and dysfunction in.
Dry needling involves inserting a thin needle into a ‘trigger point’ and leaving it in place for a few minutes- this releases tight muscles with the goal of permanently reducing muscle pain and dysfunction.
Many of our clients report to us that they feel so much relief from needling and ask for it as a preferred treatment tool.
The needles used for dry needling are very thin (not like injection needles). They are individually wrapped, sterilized and are for single use only, then they are discarded. When using proper placement techniques, you should not feel any pain when the needle is inserted. You may feel a twitch response, slight tingling or heaviness after they are inserted. This is very common and is an encouraged sign.
Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory, where as dry needling is based on western medicine and utilises our knowledge of anatomy, physiology and scientific research.
